The location of Veliko Tarnovo in Bulgaria puts it in an ideal position for the overseas home buyer who is interested in a rural property.

Veliko Tarnovo is almost midway between the Bulgarian capital of Sofia and the Black Sea resort of Varna (Golden Sands).

Veliko Tarnovo is built along a ridge above a horseshoe bend in the Yantra River, the gorge is lined with traditional houses. To the east of the town stands the Tsarevets Fortress, the original selttlements are thought to date back to the Romans, but the first fortress was built during the 5th to 7th centuries.

The main street is a typical shopping area with the usual mix of fashion shops, restaurants and currency exchanges. But step away from it and you will be meandering along streets of small shops maintained in the style of the Bulgarian Revival period. Craft shops where artists and craftsmen still using traditional skills intermingle with souvenir shops selling the usual tourist trinkets.
